A Songwriter’s Most Important Tool

I believe that the songwriting process, at its core, is simply the process of bringing together a number of unique musical elements and ideas to create a specific sound, convey a message, or express emotion. That is why I believe that the most important tool for any songwriter to have- aside from their instrument, perhaps- is some way of capturing ideas as they come to you. The problem with musical inspiration is that it can leave just as quickly as it arrives. So before you start trying to write music, make sure that you have an effective way to capture and preserve your ideas- even the bad ones. You can always go back and decide which ideas were good later. Here are a few common (and extremely helpful) methods that songwriters use to save their ideas.
